This week I have mainly been .... thinking about AI

Is Artificial Intelligence the answer to everything?

If you listen to some commentators you'd think so! The silver bullet, the magic wand - whatever you want to call it, but AI for the vast majority of business people is still a bit of a black box - not really sure how it works, but it seems like a convenient solution to anything and every situation people want to avoid spending time and brain power on.

Alas, I sense some disappointment looming.

We've have some interesting phone calls about it that usually involve somewhere along the way '...can't you just throw some AI at it' almost as though we have a box of magic AI dust that when sprinkled on something they are frustrated with makes it all kind of better.

The other interesting point that we pick up from people is that they believe AI will completely replace the input and role of real people. Sure, in some specific circumstances AI will do the heavy lifting saving you admin time and resources. For example, when researching a particular topic AI agents such as Copilot will scan far and wide as many documents as it can find and produce you a nice, concise summary. Brilliant I hear you cry. And quite rightly so, for well defined text based tasks it is indeed amazing. So long a real person then reads the summary, applies a critical viewpoint and decides whether it should form the basis of a business decision.

Accepting the output blindly would certainly leave me nervous for our business!

I've come to the conclusion that at the moment business people probably need to neither expect an overnight revolution nor bury their head like the proverbial ostrich in the nearest bucket of sand.

Let's be realistic in our expectations, accept that for a lot of everyday business owners and their activities, AI is evolving, has a role to play now and that role is likely grow significantly over time.

Right now, silver bullet - no, useful for defined activities that can be reviewed by staff - yes, very much so.

Tell me what you think - good, bad and anything in between comment@pro-forms.co.uk
